Defending Democracy: A Global Imperative

As citizens of a rapidly changing world, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. Democracy—the bedrock of our  Western and free societies—is facing unprecedented challenges. Let’s explore why safeguarding democracy matters and the threats we must confront:

The essence of Democracy isn’t just about casting ballots; it’s about “empowerment”. It gives us a voice, ensures accountability, and protects our rights. Our ability to shape our future hinges on the health of democratic institutions.

Today, there are growing threats to our American democracy.  Some of those threats are:

Partisan Polarization: Extremism and tribalism fracture societies. Bridging divides is essential for a healthy democracy.

Inequality: Widening gaps between the haves and have-nots erode trust in democratic systems. When wealth concentrates in a few hands, the very essence of democracy is at risk.

Big Tech Influence: The power wielded by tech giants can sway elections, manipulate information, and undermine democratic processes. We must strike a balance between innovation and safeguarding our democratic values.

Global Perception: Surprisingly, a recent poll shows that the U.S. is seen as a greater threat to democracy than even Russia and China. We can’t assume the mantle of defenders without introspection¹[4].
