An Attitude Changing Election

It’s amazing how one election can change my attitude.  It’s not so much that Democrats won and that the Republican Party was so loudly rebuffed, but that the authoritarian leaning and Trump supported candidates lost by a resounding winning vote.  No, it is not just these reasons that my last week’s pessimism disappeared, but that DEMOCRACY and American values won.

As election denialism permeates the Republican Party, a slate of once-mundane races will take on new meaning since the 2022 election – and could very well dictate how future elections are run. From Secretaries of State and governors to county clerks, these elective positions wield a tremendous amount of power over how and when voters cast their ballots – and what happens afterward, for these positions can hold democracy and American traditions and values in their sway

The vast majority of Trump inspired candidates for state offices lost big-time.  The fact that the Democrats maintained their control of the Senate while losing so little in the House of Representatives makes this election a sweet success for democracy and American traditional values. Just think about it, had these election deniers running for Secretary of State and governors in their respective states

Mark Finchem, candidate for Secretary of State of Arizona

Audrey Trujillo, candidate for Secretary of State of New Mexico

Kim Crockett, candidate for Secretary of State of Minnesota

Dominic Rapini, candidate for Connecticut’s Secretary of State

Brooke Paige, candidate for Vermont’s Secretary of State

Jim Marchant, candidate for Secretary of State of in Nevada

Kristina Karama, candidate for Secretary of State in Michigan

Terri Lake, candidate for Governor in Arizona

Tim Michels, candidate for Governor in Wisconsin

Doug Mastriano, candidate for Governor in Pennsylvania

had won, they would have had the opportunity to deny any vote that they opposed in the 2024 elections and replace those vote for any Republican Party’s pro-autocratic candidate. Republican claims and behaviors, indicate that they would refuse to certify the results of future elections by arguing they were fraudulent. These candidates made election denial the centerpiece of their elections. These Secretaries of States had united in their intention of not certifying any Democrat win in their respective states. Tuesday’s election was a victory for American democracy.

This election was indeed a historic win for American democracy.  Of the 552 Republicans running for state and local offices throughout the United States, 199 had denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election.  Tim Michels of Wisconsin and Jim Marchant created a coalition of candidates vowing to never allow a Democrat any victory in their states, “when my coalition of secretary of state candidates around the country get elected, we’re going to fix the whole country – and President Trump is going to be president again in 2024.”  For democracy loving nation, this is scary.

We who are freedom and democracy loving American cannot just sit on these victories, we have to prepare for an onslaught of challenges in 2024.
